ASHGATE
5th November 1997, I type out a letter to Ashgate with my blister ridden fingers as I struggle through my mandatory community service order chopping down Christmas trees at Ludshott Common, so the fat middle class people of Surrey can have a nice Christmas.
No manuscript this time, just a letter outlining my manuscript and asking if they'd like to read the damn thing. I used the 'free postage' service offered by my oppressors, hence the letter. A single second class stamp per job application is their limit. I wasn't allowed to put this down as one of the five jobs a week minimum I was forced to apply for under threat of instant dismissal from the course leading to immediate suspension of all benefits (including housing and council tax benefit) and ultimately homelessness, as it's not a real job. But they did spare me a stamp and an envelope.
I received the following response:-

Dear Sean Copland
The Evolutionary Development of Life Forms
Thank you for your letter of 5th November, and for sending me a copy of the above proposal. After some careful consideration we have reluctantly concluded your book falls beyond the plans and scope of our current publishing programme.
I am sorry to have to give you this disappointing response but wish you every success in placing the book with another publisher. I would also like to thank you for your interest in the company and hope this will not deter you from considering Ashgate again with any future publishing plans.
With best wishes
Yours sincerely
